How does an automatic transmission get better gas mileage than a manual?

thechief66 asked:

I’ve been noticing that on a lot of new cars, the four speed automatic transmissions are labeled as having better gas mileage than standard transmissions. Stick shifts have always been known to provide better mileage and performance.
Yes, I was talking about the factory estimate. Thank you for clearing that up for the question.

Can I save gas by cruising to lights on neutral?

♡♪sing♪♡ asked:

I was thinking about doing this thing where when I am about to stop at a light ahead of me, I put my car in neutral and cruise to the light and eventually stop. Then I stay there in neutral until the light is about to turn green again. Can this help save gas?

An old friend did this. I just remembered and and was wondering if it’s true. If it is, how does it make you get better gas mileage? Or even drive better?

Do alloy wheels really get better gas mileage?

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009
the_Czech asked:

I’ve heard that alum-alloy wheels give you better gas mileage than steel because they’re lighter. Makes sense, but I’m wondering if anyone has switched from steel to alloy and had it make enough of a gas mileage difference for them to notice it. Wondering whether the gas money I’ll save over time is anywhere comparable to the cost of buying new wheels.

How serious is a leaking gas water heater?

Monday, January 5th, 2009
KRISTYNUT asked:

I just noticed water around the bottom of my gas water heater. It doesn’t seem like a lot, but it is as though it sprayed from some where. I had just finished cleaning the tub. Should I call my property management right now, or can it wait till the morning? Also, do you think it’s okay for me to take a shower?

How Come the Focus gets so much better gas mileage then a Civic?

Friday, January 2nd, 2009
Steven R asked:

Yet the Civic rating states it gets better gas mileage then the Focus?
Again as I said before I drove a Civic from California to Oregon the same way I drove the Focus and got so much worse gas mileage then the Focus when I drove it down to California. Both are 2007 and brand new. Driving habits were the same.
Oops I thought I had said that. It’s the same road with the same hills and downhills. Nope the Civic gets either 30/40 or 30/38 depending on the model where the focus I drove down was 27/34
