How long does it take for a gas water heat to heat up?

If the gas heater has been off for more than 8 hours, how should I wait for the water to get hot?

   about an hour

   An electric model those accursed things can take freakin forever to heat up.

   check the recovery rate on the side of the tank, there should be startup (cold) time . if not wait an hour then try a faucet.
